Overview

Janet Rae Montgomery joined the firm as a member in 2011. Before joining the firm, she worked at Schiff Hardin & Waite and other law firms in Oak Brook, Chicago, and San Francisco. She concentrates her practice in trust and estate planning and administration. Many clients have been with her for twenty years or more, and has second generation clients.
Miss Montgomery is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estates Counsel (ACTEC). She serves as the chair of the Fiduciary Income Tax Committee (2013 – 2016), is a member of the Substantive Chairs Committee which is one of the leadership committees of the College, and is also a member of the Asset Protection and Professional Responsibility Committees of ACTEC. In Illinois, which has approximately 87,000 attorneys, fewer than 100 are members of ACTEC.

Janet is an adjunct professor in the LLM program at Northwestern University Law School, where she teaches “Income Taxation of Trusts and Estates”.
Miss Montgomery remains a member of the DuPage Estate Planning Council, is a member of the Chicago Estate Planning Council and a co-chair of the Networking Initiative (2012-2014), and is a member of the Trust Law Committee of the Chicago Bar Association. She is a past chair of one of the Probate Divisions of the Chicago Bar Association.

Janet is the principal author of “Income Taxation of Trusts” in the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education handbook Trust Administration and of “Protecting Family Assets” in the IICLE handbook Asset Protection Planning.

She has served on the planning committee for the annual IICLE Estate Planning Short Course. She has spoken and written extensively on estate planning topics, including at the IICLE Estate Planning Short Courses. In addition, Miss Montgomery has spoken at many other IICLE seminars on Estate Planning, Trust and Estate Administration, Ethics, and Asset Protection topics.
Miss Montgomery completed her undergraduate work at the University of Southern California and at Trinity College, University of Dublin, Dublin, Ireland, and earned her B.A. from University of Southern California (magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa). She obtained her J.D. degree from Stanford Law School where she was also a member of the law review. She is admitted to practice in both Illinois and California.

Janet has lived in La Grange since 1987 and is active in several community organizations.
